  • Gol o Morgh (Flower and Bird) in Persian Painting

Gol o Morgh (Flower and Bird) is a style in Persian painting. The flower and bird symbolize divine grace and the delicate manifestation of the Creator. The romantic dialogue between the flower and the bird is likened to the praise of God and the remembrance of the divine. The flower represents the beloved, and the bird (morgh) is the lover. In Gol o Morgh painting, creating harmony between the elements is very subtle. The bird does not necessarily have to be depicted, but if present, it is shown patiently waiting for the flower to bloom and to court it. Sometimes the bird, in a state of ecstasy, detaches itself from the material world and ascends towards the spiritual realm.

The following verse reflects the hidden meaning in Gol o Morgh painting well:

“The nightingale’s thought is all about the flower becoming its companion,

The flower is pondering how to charm in its own way.”

فکر بلبل همه آن است که گل شد یارش

گل در اندیشه که چون عشوه کند در کارش

Historically, the combination of plants and birds began when the depiction of plants shifted to geometric designs. This is because flowers and plants, with their circular and intricate textures, can accommodate geometric patterns, while birds, with their soft bodies, require non-geometric designs. Works featuring Gol o Morgh from the Seljuk, Safavid, and Qajar periods exist, each with their own differences.
